The Bible In This Present Age

Ancient, outdated, barbaric, erroneous, fallible, irrelevant, homophobic, chauvinistic, misogynistic, intolerant, and even laughable. These are just a few of the words that are tossed around in this present age by men and women regarding the word of God, the Bible. And yet, when they toss around these words, they do not do it against “God’s word,” so to speak. They claim that the Bible is not the product of God, but the product of lunatics or liars or a combination of both – the vilest and basest men whoever walked the face of the earth. After all, who but the most devious or depraved would claim as the Bible authors do, that God has spoken (e.g. Hebrews 1:1,2) when He has not?

One of the more traditional icons of the autumn season is that of the scarecrow. A scarecrow is an object made to look like a person and which is set up in a field of crops in order to scare away birds. Though I have done some gardening in my life, I have never used a scarecrow and so I cannot attest as to whether or not they work from my own experience. However, I can understand the reasoning behind their use – birds eat crops and seeds; humans scare away birds, keeping them from doing so; humans cannot always defend their crops; a scarecrow can maintain the constant image of a human and scare birds away. Scarecrows are not real in one sense of the word, in that they are false imitations of that which is real (humans). While they are not real, the fear that they are designed to inflict is real. At the same time (and try not to get confused here), the fear that they inflict is not really real, because it is merely self inflicted – there is nothing really there that should inflict fear. As we will see, it is not birds alone that are afraid of “scarecrows.”

God’s Powerful, Saving, Gospel Meeting

It is unfortunate the way that some approach a gospel meeting – instead of seeing it as an opportunity to be enjoyed they see it is a burden to be born or an inconvenience to be ignored. Though statistic after statistic could be offered showing how much time Australians give to life’s true burdens and inconveniences (television, the internet, etc.), it is not probable that these statistics alone would convince anyone to give up his pastime in favour of a spiritual primetime. In light of that fact and the attitude of some, perhaps both those who plan on attending the meeting and those who do not would do well to hear the words of the apostle Paul: “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16).

Have You Done What You Could?

A couple of years ago in the United States, a monument was erected on the Washington Mall to honor the lives of those who fought and died in World War II. This monument features a wall of golden stars, representing the lives of American servicemen lost in battle. Similar monuments stand all over Washington D.C., both to soldiers and to leaders, to remind the American public of the great sacrifices that it took for this country to exist and to remind those who most notably work in Washington D.C. – the lawmakers and rulers of the United States – that their work is of great and grave importance. A similar monument stands in the Bible to all those who open its pages – a monument to a woman who, quite simply, did “what she could” (Mark 14:8).

Worship Preparation

The morning begins well enough – an alarm has been thoughtfully set by Mr. Jones; plenty of time has been given for self preparation, wife preparation, and children preparation. However, this morning the alarm is an unwelcome sound – the game went late last night, and the Jones family just had to see the outcome. Mr. Jones begins what will become a series of aggravated taps on the “snooze” button, before finally awakening enough to get himself up. His cushion time is gone, but he can still make it to church right on time if everything goes according to schedule. He awakens Mrs. Jones, who, unlike Mr. Jones, is alarmed at the time.
